How Stuttering Problems Become More Problematic

It is a sad fact, but a stuttering problem is not the end-all be-all of the problem.  It could pave the way for many other struggles that the person may have to deal with for weeks, months, or even years to come.

The main struggle is the self-concept.  This includes how the person sees him or herself, how worthy he or she feels, and how he or she identifies him or herself.  People who have stuttering disorders revolve their self-concept around stuttering.  They may experience different reactions from people about their speech problem and they may start to believe that what they have (stuttering) is socially unacceptable.  This, of course, results to negative self concept.

A stuttering problem can make the person avoid social situations for the fear that he or she may get misunderstood, or worse, laughed at.  He or she may also be unwilling to express anger and other feelings openly.  This is because the person may have the fear of rejection.  Thirdly, a person who stutters may also get depressed.  Living with a disorder is never easy and to know that there really isn’t any cure for it could be a very helpless and hopeless situation.

Despite knowing that there is no magic pill for the disorder though, some people still feel guilty.  They are inclined to think that if they only had more willpower, or they tried hard enough, they could make the disorder go away.  But the fact is they can’t.  There are treatments available for the problem, but they are mainly focused on lessening the severity of the case or teaching the person how to cope with the situation more effectively.

A stuttering problem can truly be more problematic when the sufferer fails to get proper guidance on his or her condition. This is why at the onset of the symptoms, it is very important to consult with a professional to be enlightened on how to deal with it well.
